Usually, recap episodes are loathed among audiences as a pointless waste of time, or at best accepted as essential in television in the age of weekly production. This wasn't always the case, and Avatar: The Last Airbender showed it via "The Ember Island Players," a popular episode during its concluding run now being granted a special Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair drop.

Highlights regarding the special release

The complete Secret Lair superdrop for the forthcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender collection was unveiled recently. Containing five Secret Lairs, and even though a set named "My Cabbages!" is an admittedly funny homage to Avatar's beloved recurring figure, the other collections appear slightly uninspired, except for one standout: "The Ember Island Players."

Inspired by the seventeenth episode from season 3 of the beloved series, this special set contains the following cards:

• 1x Phantasmal Image portrayed as "Absolutely Accurate Actor"
• 1x Braid of Fire
• 1x Cursed Mirror
• 1x Mask of Memory
• 1x Thespian's Stage

Why this installment is special

Fans of the series fondly remember this episode, which functioned as a recap of the hero Aang and his friends' quest leading up to the conclusion. In contrast to standard summary installments, or retrospective segments, "The Ember Island Players" wasn't motivated from financial limitations or scheduling problems. The creators truly wanted to give fans an opportunity to recap the series' story, yet they chose to approach it inventively.

In the episode, the main characters watches a stage show based on their journeys at a playhouse located on Ember Island, named The Boy in the Iceberg. The entire performance is wildly exaggerated, melodramatic, and completely amusing. It excels because it plays on the characters' views about themselves, contrasting them compared to how society (and especially the Fire Nation) views them. It contains an ideal level of introspective humor, and it becomes perhaps the top rendition of the show available to date.

Worth and cost

When it comes to cost-effectiveness, this represents an excellent Secret Lair because of one major element: Braid of Fire. This specific card is valued between $20 and $40 on online marketplaces as of now, while for $29.99 you can obtain the entire Secret Lair, or alternatively $39.99 for the foil version.

Magic: The Gathering's Avatar: The Last Airbender edition will be available during early access events on Nov. 14 and releases worldwide on November 21.
