Adult Swim's Top New Show of 2025 Earns a Significant Extension for Two More Seasons.
Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often defined by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about watching this charming family go about their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to help comedy break out of its current cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well catalyze that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to enjoy the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
