An informant has told a parliamentary probe that the UK failed to secure classified devices allowing the Taliban to track down local individuals who worked with allied troops.

Information Leak Endangers Numerous in Danger

The source, known as Person A, stated that Afghans affected by the information breach were told to move homes and change their mobile numbers to ensure their safety from the ruling authorities.

MPs are currently examining the Conservative government's handling of a massive disclosure of personal details involving almost nineteen thousand Afghans who had asked to move to the United Kingdom to escape the Taliban.

How the Leak Was Discovered

A spreadsheet with their personal data, comprising names, addresses and occasionally household data, was accidentally leaked by an official working at British military command in last year.

The breach became known only in August 2023, when the names of nine people who had applied to relocate to the UK surfaced on Facebook.

Taliban Capabilities

Many believe there's a misunderstanding that Afghan rulers lack comparable resources that western nations possess,” Person A informed lawmakers.

When questioned about if militant forces possessed necessary encryption, the source declared: “They've got everything.”

Consequences of the Information Leak

Initial findings presented to the inquiry estimated that at least 49 relatives and co-workers of Afghans affected by the leak had been murdered.

A gag order about the breach was enacted in last year and restricted any information concerning it from media reporting until recently.

Protective Actions

Due to legal constraints, the source and the volunteer organization she was working with advised affected households they were supporting that they had “apprehensions that certain devices had been intercepted”.

“We advised that they change residence where feasible and altered their contact details. These represented the primary information that, if authorities had access to these details, would cause their location being found,” she said.

Challenged Assessments

Person A contested that internal investigation conducted by a former official had been incorrect to conclude that the acquisition of the information by militant forces was “not significantly alter current risk levels”.

“The thing to remember is that these Afghans are not standing up to the Taliban; they live secretly. All concerns relate to former occupations.”

The source explained terrible violence experienced by affected individuals, including electrocution, waterboarding, and severe beatings.

“Instances include four-year-old children who have had bones crushed to pressure the family to disclose hiding places,” she testified.
