Arrangements for Putin-Trump Summit Shelved Days Following Hungarian Capital Negotiations Announced

There are "no preparations" for US President Donald Trump to meet Russia's Vladimir Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has declared.

This past week the US president said he and the Russian president would meet in Budapest in the coming fortnight to examine the war in Ukraine.

A planning session between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was planned for recently - but the administration clarified the two had had a "constructive" call and that a face-to-face session was not "needed".

The administration declined to provide further information on why the talks had been postponed.

Background Context

The US president had discussed a Hungarian meeting during a call with Putin, a just prior to hosting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Some reports suggested his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with sources claiming Trump had pushed him to relinquish large areas of Ukraine's east as part of a deal with Russia.

Nevertheless, on Monday Trump embraced a ceasefire proposal supported by Ukraine and EU officials to halt the hostilities on the existing battle lines.

"Let it be cut where it stands," he remarked.

Russia has frequently resisted against freezing the present battle positions.

The Russian government was exclusively seeking "permanent resolution", Lavrov stated on this week, suggesting that halting hostilities would only amount to a short-term truce.

Political Perspectives

The "root causes" of the hostilities demanded attention, the Russian diplomat emphasized, using Russian diplomatic language for a set of comprehensive conditions that involve the recognition of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the disarmament of the country – a impossible condition for Ukraine and its EU supporters.

The Ukrainian president stated conversations concerning the battle positions were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Russia was "doing everything" to avoid diplomacy.

He further commented the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "become engaged" was that of the provision of long-range weapons to the Ukrainian military.

Military Considerations

The Russian president's spontaneous discussion with the US leader recently preceded reports that the US was planning to provide distance-capable weapons to Ukraine that could theoretically target deep into Russia.

The Ukrainian leader said it was the missile discussion that had compelled Moscow to participate in talks. The talk about the weapons systems had turned out to be a "valuable contribution" in diplomacy", he added.
