Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their recent conversation.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”

It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.

“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”

Authorities issued security footage Monday of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries according to reports.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday morning in the area between the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his wife just had a child.

“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd did not participate this season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with a shoulder issue that required surgery.

Boyd came to New York as a free agent in spring and was expected to be an important component of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while working his way back.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he attends every game. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He signed with Arizona in last year and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
