Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Superstar and Cultural Figure, Dies at Eighty-One Years of Age
Global audiences mourns the loss of Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican musician and performer whose distinctive vocal talent played a key role in spreading the reggae genre across the globe. He passed away at the age of eighty-one.
“With deep sorrow that I share that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure and subsequent pneumonia,” posted his spouse Latifa Chambers on Instagram. “I am grateful for his family, close friends, fellow artists and coworkers who walked with him on his life’s path. To all his supporters globally, please know that your encouragement was his strength during his whole career … Jimmy, my dear, may you rest in peace. I will honor your wishes.” Her post was co-signed by their offspring, Lilty and Aken.
Jimmy Cliff was beloved for hit songs including “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, “I Can See Clearly Now” and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His optimistic musical style and positive spirit brought him a large and loyal following.
In addition to his music accomplishments, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972’s drama film “The Harder They Come”, a role that was highly acclaimed and is considered a cornerstone of Jamaican cinema.
He was one of just a handful of musicians, alongside Bob Marley and other greats, to be honored with the esteemed Jamaican Order of Merit.
