Los Angeles Battles Historic Heat Only Days After Severe Winter Weather.
After enduring torrential rains that resulted in floodwaters across parts of the city, the City of Angels is now grappling with unseasonably warm conditions for this time of year.
Record-Setting Temperatures
During the day Friday, the mercury reached 33 degrees Celsius (91 Fahrenheit) in downtown Los Angeles, as reported by meteorologists. This exceeds the previous daily record for this date, which was 88°F (31°C) and was set in 2025.
"Unusually high temperatures" were noted on NWS graphics for the region.
Public Health Warnings
The weather service issued a warning that Friday's conditions posed an "higher threat for heat illness" for people sensitive to heat. Their guidance suggested:
- Drinking plenty of fluids.
- Reducing outdoor activities during the afternoon hours of the day.
- Ensuring you do not leave kids or animals unattended in a hot car.
A Sharp Weather Swing
This sudden spike in temperature arrives just after a powerful winter storm that struck the region earlier in the week. That event brought heavy snow, strong winds, and thunderstorms to mountainous regions, causing flash flood warnings for many residents.
Tragically, the storm also resulted in a large avalanche in the Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Forecast Ahead
Looking ahead some relief is coming. Temperatures were forecast to decrease to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in central Los Angeles by overnight.
Additional areas that reached the 90-degree mark featured Long Beach, Burbank, and Woodland Hills. Meanwhile, Santa Maria, Oxnard, Camarillo, and Westwood were projected to see the upper eighties.
In the coming days, central LA can see readings in the 80s, with a further cooldown expected for the following week.
