National Guardsman Healing Following Being Shot in Washington DC

A servicemember of the Air National Guard is showing improvement after he was gravely wounded in an ambush-style shooting last month in the US capital.

The family of the 24-year-old soldier, twenty-four, say "the injury to his head is gradually improving and that he's beginning to 'look more like himself,'" said the state's chief executive the governor.

The family anticipates the Air Force staff sergeant to be in intensive treatment for the next two to three weeks, and they feel optimistic about his recovery, according to the official's statement.

The serviceman was one of a pair of state guardsmen injured by gunfire when a gunman began shooting in proximity to the White House on November 26th. His fellow guardsmember, twenty-year-old Sarah Beckstrom, succumbed to her wounds.

"We continue to ask all state residents and the nation's citizens for their prayers!" the governor said.

The governor was present at a vigil on Friday evening for the injured soldier at a local secondary school in his hometown, where the guardsman was once a pupil.

A clergyman at the vigil shared a statement from the guardsman's mother and father, his family.

"We know that there is a difficult journey to go," they expressed, according to regional media Metro News.

"However our faith keeps us optimistic. We remain grateful for the well-wishes and the support from people all over the globe."

Previously, the governor said the serviceman had responded to a nurse with a thumbs-up and was able to wiggle his feet.

Law enforcement have charged the alleged gunman, an individual from Afghanistan named Rahmanullah Lakanwal, with first-degree murder and attempted murder.

Prior to his arrival to the United States in two years ago, he was once a counterterrorism soldier in a CIA-backed unit that operated alongside US forces in the South Asian nation.

Staff Sgt Wolfe was one of 2,000 National Guard members whom the former president deployed to the Washington DC in last summer as part of his immigration and crime-related crackdown in Democratic-led cities.

In the aftermath of the shooting, the former president said he desired an additional five hundred National Guard troops sent to the District of Columbia.

The Trump administration has also cited the attack as a reason for further immigration crackdown measures.

They have halted naturalization proceedings for immigrants from 19 countries that were part of a entry restriction announced over the recent season, among them the suspect's home country.
