Netanyahu to Hold Talks with President Donald Trump in US Amidst Fears of Israel's Wider Military Actions

Benjamin Netanyahu is due to confer with the US president at the presidential resort in Florida on Monday evening. This occurs as anxieties grow that Israel could launch new operations against regional foes, possibly dragging the Middle East deeper into turmoil.

The Israeli leader flew from Israel on Sunday, marking his fifth meeting to see Trump in the United States this year.

Ceasefire in Gaza and Pending Hurdles

High on the agenda will be the halt in hostilities in Gaza, which in October halted the destructive two-year war. While the terms for an opening period have been mostly completed, with Israeli forces withdrawing to new positions and Hamas freeing all living and almost all of the deceased hostages, enormous challenges face the execution of the next stage of the president's 20-point plan.

There are also fears that Israel will undertake new military campaigns against Hezbollah in Lebanon, breaking a ceasefire put in place more than a year ago, or against Iran, which it claims of accelerating the manufacture of ballistic missiles in the past few months.

More than 70,000 Palestinians, predominantly civilians, lost their lives in Gaza during the war and the vast majority of the territory’s 2.3 million population was uprooted. Roughly 400 Palestinians have died in Gaza since the October ceasefire, and a great many continue to live in conditions of severe deprivation.

In the past few weeks, heavy rain and chilly weather have compounded the suffering in Gaza, where most housing and infrastructure have been badly damaged or destroyed.

Meanwhile, efforts to secure a stability deal between Israel and Syria have failed to make significant progress and will also be discussed at Mar-a-Lago. Israeli officials have also called for more effective efforts to disarm Hezbollah.

Netanyahu has an election within 10 months, and the upcoming polls will shape his agenda. “Everything is connected to [his] political survival,” an analyst said.

Surveys suggest Netanyahu’s current coalition would have a hard time to form a government if elections were held now. Many voters are angry over the failures that led to the 2023 Hamas raid, efforts concerning military service exemptions, and a string of controversies.

A strong bond with Trump would bolster Netanyahu’s appeal among floating voters and his base. This suggests any public disagreement between the two leaders is very doubtful, analysts said.

Netanyahu is expected to seek to persuade Trump of the need for Israel to maintain a technological superiority over potential regional enemies. Many Israeli officials were alarmed by past US comments regarding advanced weapons sales to other regional states.
