New Year Partygoers Advised to Dress Warmly with Snow Expected Across the UK
Weather experts are saying a frosty beginning to the new year, with snow expected across much of the UK. Celebrants are advised to dress warmly as bitterly cold temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.
Celebratory Plans Proceed Amid Warnings
Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay events are planned to go ahead, unlike last year's calling-off. This is in spite of advisories for snow across northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve night for those partying, so warmer clothes will be necessary," noted the weather service.
Displays Under Mostly Clear but Cold Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with dry conditions and open skies. Temperatures are forecast to be low, meaning warm wraps essential, as per forecasters.
In more northern areas, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
Widespread Advisories for Friday
Heading into Friday, weather warnings are in place across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

- Hold-ups and call-offs are expected on public transport.
Temperatures Forecast to Drop Even More
Going into the new year, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are likely to hit the north of the country.
Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Public Health Alerts Released
Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Authorities said this indicated the weather was expected to cause notable consequences across health and social care services. This involves a expected uptick in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.
