The 2026 cars are designed to be more compact, agile and eco-conscious than this year.

F1 has unveiled the official vocabulary that will be used to describe the technical complexities of its upcoming 2026 regulations.

The sport is introducing what is potentially the biggest rules overhaul in its competitive history for the 2026 campaign, featuring new chassis and engine rules and the required adoption of eco-friendly fuels.

The updated 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids, which keep the hybrid V6 layout, boast a significantly increased energy storage, driving key advancements in the aero packages.

During grand prix events, pilots will strategically manage electrical energy – sometimes even hot laps – to secure the best result.

Broad surveys were undertaken with a wide range of fans, including dedicated enthusiasts and casual observers, to identify which terms would aid comprehension of the central aspects of the new regulations.

The primary aim was to present a range of advanced technical aspects of the racing as straightforward as possible for the widest audience.

Consequently, initial designations for specific components – such as "x-mode and z-mode" for the adjustable aero – have been discarded in preference for straightforward terms that directly explain the actual function of the innovation.

Key Technical Innovations

Regulators explain that competitors will have more power to make decisions regarding power usage, harvesting, and efficiency.

The upcoming changes feature a range of settings that will be clearly indicated on television graphics to aid the fans' insight of the on-track action.

  • Passing Mode: This takes over from the existing Drag Reduction System. It provides a burst of extra electrical energy available when a car is close behind the vehicle in front to execute an pass.
  • Boost Mode: This is a driver-operated energy deployment from the energy recovery system that can be deployed for overtaking or defending. It delivers the pilot full engine and battery energy at the activation of a control.

Both of these crucial modes will have to be managed carefully, as the overall battery capacity is capped.

  • Adjustable Aero: Both the nose and rear wings change configuration – flattening on the straights for low aerodynamic resistance and top speed, and sealing in the corners for peak grip.
  • Energy Harvesting: Drivers can recharge the energy store with power recovered from braking, or during throttle lift at the straight's end or in sections where only partial power is required.

2026 Car Specifications

The next-generation machines will be smaller and lighter compared to the 2025 spec, with a wheelbase reduced by 200mm to 3,400mm, overall width narrowed by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the car weight reduced by 30kg.

Cumulative downforce is anticipated to be reduced by approximately fifteen to thirty percent, although teams will undoubtedly recover some as they optimize their packages.

Aerodynamic drag has been cut by 40%. The vehicles will employ active aerodynamics – both wings will move on the straight sections to cut resistance and enhance velocity and revert into place for optimal grip in corners.

Pirelli tyres will keep 18-inch wheel rims, but the rubber compounds will be narrower, by 25mm at the front and 30mm at the rear.

2026 Engine Regulations

The new power units will have an roughly half-and-half distribution in energy output by the petrol engine and the electrical system, a rise from about one-fifth electric power in the current formula.
