The Details Known About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

At least 16 people lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have labeled a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have announced the death toll is 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 injured people were transported to hospital.

Those who died are yet to be publicly named, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who have been identified at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, saying they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. The injured comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
