The Eurovision Song Contest Was Once a Lighthearted Spectacle – But It Has Evolved Into a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.
A freshly coined term emerged a few months after the start of the military campaign against Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it means “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, per insights from doctors like paediatricians. Typically, it is uncommon for doctors to treat a child who has lost their entire family. But, there has been nothing “normal” regarding the widespread destruction in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of children who have lost limbs exceeds that of any other place in the world. Nothing ordinary about scores of doctors coming back from a landscape of rubble with reports of children being systematically aimed at.
An Unimaginable Crisis In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities
Conditions in Gaza persist as hell on earth. Critical healthcare resources are not getting in those in need, and groups like Amnesty International contend that violations are continuing. Authorities disputes these accusations, just as it denies each claim it is implicated in. Yet as traumatised orphans are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its stated mission of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to offer a blood-red carpet for Israel, although a number of European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Because this, it seems, is what international harmony resembles.
Historically, Eurovision excluded Russia from participating in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza appears to be entirely distinct.
A Selective Vision

All of this, it would seem, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.
The Show Goes On Amidst Profound Human Cost
The contest marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the projected longevity of an individual in Gaza today. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the pure, unadulterated fun it was formerly known for. A competition that was originally built on togetherness has devolved into a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
