The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Styling Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer who crafted many legendary styles associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, including the pastel suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."
This news arrives just weeks after he presented his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in shaping body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as several ensembles for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.
