The Former French President to Pen Jail Diary Detailing Two Dozen Days Incarcerated

Nicolas Sarkozy will soon publish a book in the coming weeks titled A Prisoner’s Diary, detailing the period spent behind bars.

This news emerged just 11 days after the ex-leader left prison while he appeals the guilty verdict on charges of criminal conspiracy connected to efforts to obtain election campaign funds linked to the government of the late Libyan dictator.

Prison Experience: Inner Thoughts

“Inside jail there is nothing to see, and nothing to do,” he writes in an extract, implying the book is more about his thoughts from seclusion instead of extensive analysis on the strained and troubled correctional facilities in the country.

“Quiet is absent, which doesn’t exist at the prison, where there is endless commotion,” he states. “The racket persists relentlessly. Yet, similar to barren lands, one’s inner world grows stronger in prison.”

Freedom Plea: Sharing the Struggle

During his plea for freedom, Sarkozy had appeared remotely from his cell, depicting prison life as exhausting. He had told the court: “I want to pay tribute those working in the jail, who are exceptionally humane, and who helped make this ordeal manageable – since it’s deeply troubling.”

“It never crossed my mind that in my seventies, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s an ordeal forced upon me. I admit it’s difficult, it’s very hard. It affects one every inmate because it’s gruelling.”

Unprecedented Situation

He, who served as France’s president for a five-year term, was the first past president in the European Union and the first leader since WWII in the French Republic to be incarcerated.

Ahead of his incarceration he had said he planned to utilize the opportunity to compose an account.

Books in Prison

Unconfirmed is whether he had time to read and critique the volumes he brought with him: a biography of Jesus in two parts together with Dumas’s work the famous story, a plot where an innocent man ends up incarcerated later flees to exact retribution.

Prison Conditions

He was held in solitary confinement due to safety concerns in a space approximately nine square meters including private facilities at the correctional facility located in the capital. Security personnel were stationed in the next cell.

Sources mentioned that he consumed solely dairy snacks in prison due to concerns meals provided could have been tampered with. He had facilities to prepare his own meals but refused this, according to reports. Not known is if the memoir includes his dietary choices.

Legal Perspective

Sarkozy’s lawyer, who visited his client each day throughout the jail term, stated during proceedings security would be better out of prison compared to inside. “He has faced threats against his life, has heard screaming at night plus rapid actions next door as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Legal Proceedings

He entered custody on 21 October after the judiciary imposed a half-decade term for illegal collaboration related to a plan to secure election financing for his 2007 presidential race.

He denies wrongdoing and is contesting the ruling, and a fresh trial is scheduled for early next year.
