Arsenal Football Club has declared that its disputed sponsorship partnership with Visit Rwanda will terminate in June this upcoming year.

Background and Scrutiny

The arrangement, reportedly valued at around £10m per year, was first established and has since been heavily criticized.

Such scrutiny is due to the country's reported backing for the M23 forces in persistent fighting in the eastern part of the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Earlier this year, Arsenal was accused of delivering an "outrageous" snub to the government of the DRC by failing to convene with the DRC's foreign minister to talk about the deal.

Deal Composition and Aims

Visit Rwanda functions as a division of the Rwanda's development authority, which is a public entity.

There is broad consensus that Arsenal signed and maintained this partnership primarily to expand their fanbase in Africa.

Nevertheless, the partnership has now terminated after both parties “mutually agreed” to part ways.

“Jointly, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have exceeded the initial objectives of the partnership – advocating preservation and responsible tourism, inspiring millions of supporters to explore Rwanda, and building a solid groundwork for tourism growth,” declared an club announcement.

The statement continued that the partnership has also supported Rwanda's goal of becoming an international sporting hub in Africa and stage additional international competitions while delivering local football projects that have assisted numerous youth athletes and coaches enhance their abilities and promote increased engagement in sport across the country.

Leadership View and Supporter Response

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's chief executive officer, described the partnership as a “major expedition” and stated it had been “driving forward” the club's aspirations.

But that is not how a section of Arsenal's fanbase, with the protest movement Gunners Supporting Peace staging protests outside the club's home ground during the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against the French club in April's conclusion.

Activists unveiled a sign stating “Drop Visit Rwanda” and distributed armbands to conceal the Visit Rwanda logo on kits.

Broader Context and Other Clubs

During that period, the French champions continued their sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda for several more years.

Meanwhile, the Madrid-based team inked a recent contract for the same period that has led to the emblem appearing on the Madrid-based team's male and female kits.
