The Lions of Teranga's Rising Talent Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.

When I walk into the room, the young midfielder grabs a football he clings to throughout our chat. It’s a simple visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states this Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His determination and raw talent convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the hardest approval to secure didn't come from a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.

Overcoming Initial Obstacles

Eventually, on “a special day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to pursue his path in the sport. Another challenge was his small stature, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the institution that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After Camara was named the MVP in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “astonished” to discover he was without a contract. They moved fast. “They took me directly to the academy. They didn’t want me from returning home,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Season and European Arrival

This move set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his country to victory and earning player of the tournament.

Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” says the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a choice his family support to maintain his concentration.

Inspiration and On-Field Identity

Off-field noise are not really a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and exceptional playing qualities. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from dead-ball situations are notable assets. He admits a need to control his competitive fire, having been shown red at the start of his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he jokes.

Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Ambitions

At Monaco, he cherishes learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” Camara noted.

Currently, his focus is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

On a potential transfer to the English top flight, he is focused on Monaco for now. “I am very comfortable here,” he insists. He is frequently ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about targeting the senior top prize down the line.

“We are the favourites – that's the reality. If you beat England in their own country… it gives you confidence.”

Looking ahead, this talented midfielder blends a modest start, unwavering focus, and big dreams as he aims to guide Senegal to Afcon success and build his own legendary path in the game.
