The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song

This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching backstories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

Overall, the intro looks amazing. However, I felt that something was lost in the music selection.

The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song composed by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the official score of that title, the second release put out by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the excitement and energy that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.

Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.

The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords for me. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.

Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the series will have a few surprises and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be among these.

This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
