The Porcine Pardon: Hog Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Leader.
While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a current administration.
“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”
The gathering, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “6-7” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The craze became so widespread that a major dictionary recently named “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a notably cheerful message.
“It represents the spirit of Miami: happy, diverse, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Annually, we are proud to celebrate heritage and mercy in a way only Miami can.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and strong coffee as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
