A large-scale search and recovery mission is currently in progress in the Caribbean region for a pair of unlocated sailboats transporting relief goods traveling from Mexico to Cuba.

Naval Rescue Operations Deployed

Authorities in Mexico has dispatched naval assets and reconnaissance aircraft to find the two vessels, which were carrying a minimum of 9 sailors, as stated by a official statement.

The boats had been expected to reach Havana on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their safe arrival, authorities reported.

The Situation of Humanitarian Support to the Island

The island nation has depended significantly on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over recent weeks, as the country struggles through widespread national electricity failures.

"Both captains and crews are veteran seafarers, and both vessels are fitted with suitable safety systems and signalling equipment," a representative associated with the mission said.

The nine crew members are from Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexican authorities said it has established contact with maritime rescue coordination centres from each country along with their consular staff.

"The group is co-operating fully with the officials and continue to be hopeful in the crews' ability to make it to Cuba without incident," the official further stated.

Earlier Aid Shipment

Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and greeted with fanfare a separate vessel that had carried 14 tons of donated goods to the island.

That ship, nicknamed "a modern Granma" in reference to the boat in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to begin the armed struggle in the 1950s, delivered solar panels, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, bicycles and food.

Broader Political Context

Volunteers and NGOs have primarily led efforts to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, a period which saw a fuel embargo on the Communist-run nation was initiated.

Global bodies have since highlighted ""critical" supply shortages, with more than 50,000 surgical procedures cancelled in Cuba due to power shortages.

Political tensions have been ramped up over the past months, with remarks from various officials underscoring the complicated nature of bilateral relations.

Reacting to previous proposals, a high-ranking official from Cuba declared that "the governance model of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Accounts suggest that early stages of discussions had begun, although their present status remains not publicly known.

The maritime authorities said it was committed to using all of the resources at its reach to find the sailboats and ensure the well-being of the people on board.

At this time, there has been no public statement on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
