UK, UN and EU Denounce a ‘Gross Injustice’ of Pro-Democracy Activist Jimmy Lai’s Two-Decade Imprisonment.

The sentencing of political dissident Jimmy Lai, a British national Jimmy Lai to a lengthy prison term in Hong Kong has sparked international condemnation. Advocacy bodies and multiple governments have described the legal verdicts politically motivated.

International Outcry and Calls for Release

Britain's top diplomat Yvette Cooper declared that the two-decade sentence amounts to a life sentence for the 78-year-old. She labeled the prosecution as politically motivated via a statute aimed at quieting those who speak out against China. She urged Hong Kong's authorities to cease his persecution and release him to his family.

“This ruling illustrates how the vague and overly broad clauses of Hong Kong’s legal framework are subject to interpretation in contravention of international human rights obligations,” said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.

An EU spokesperson, Anitta Hipper, remarked that Brussels “deplores” the outcome of Lai’s prosecution and pushed for his prompt and absolute freedom.

Jimmy Lai, the creator behind the now-shuttered activist publication, was detained following the imposition of a controversial national security law in Hong Kong. The law was enacted by Beijing in the wake of extended demonstrations backed by Lai's media outlet.

He was found guilty on counts of conspiracy to produce seditious material and conspiracy to collude with foreign forces. The second set of accusations were brought under the disputed legislation.

Personal Fears

His son, Sebastien Lai, shared that his father fears dying alone apart from his relatives. Lai's defense lawyers described him the “globally most notable detainee” currently incarcerated.

Sebastien Lai noted that while the sentence was expected, its reality was harsher than imagined, even as it offered some “solace” that the judicial farce had concluded.

Political Repercussions

The sentencing has influenced diplomatic ties between London and Beijing. British leader Keir Starmer reportedly raised Lai’s case during a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping recently. Yet, the extent of progress on obtaining his liberty remains unclear.

Sebastien Lai queried the point of enhanced diplomatic ties while his father remains imprisoned, stating it felt “somewhat insensitive.”

Official Responses

In contrast, the officials from China applauded the court's decision. Hong Kong’s top official John Lee claimed the sentence manifested that “the rule of law is upheld.”

The mouthpiece of China’s foreign ministry, Lin Jian, called Lai the “chief architect” behind previous protests and maintained the trial had been “proper and within the law.” He called on foreign countries not to interfere in what he termed China's internal issues.

Organizations like Reporters Without Borders called Lai as a symbol of declining journalistic independence in Hong Kong. Their director general remarked it was a “bleak moment for those who care about a independent media.”
